Dirty Dozen by The Gaming Todays Mark Mayer

Seeing Stanford finally end the UConn women’s incredible win streak at 90 straight reminds me of a story worthy of a Paul Harvey commentary.

In the mid 1980’s, current North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell was about ready to be hired at South Carolina to replace Pam Parsons and her supposed flings with members of the Lady Gamecocks. That’s not the story.

What is concerns how Hatchell wound up at UNC. Sylvia coached at Francis Marion College in Florence (SC), an NAIA power with a legendary player named Pearl Moore. I broke the story in the Florence Morning News that Hatchell preferred the UNC job in a perfect world.

The next day, Charleston’s Nancy Wilson was hired at South Carolina. Hatchell stayed at Francis Marion, eventually landed the UNC job, won a national championship and remains one of the top coaches in women’s hoops. I’m sure she held it against me for years that I cost her the South Carolina job, but I’ll take some credit for her UNC success.

And now you know…”the rest of the story.”

Now for this week’s Dirty Dozen, which finally heads into conference play.

12. Xavier (2-8-1 ATS): Big game coming this week against city rival Cincinnati. The X-men are 8-4 straight up.

11. Alabama (2-7 ATS): The Tide rises from No. 7. This week is Toledo at home and then a Dozen Classic at Mississippi St.

10. C. Michigan (3-9 ATS): Only game this week is Sunday at Western Michigan. We’ll give up the NFL playoffs for that, of course.

9. W. Kentucky (3-9 ATS): Hosts Denver this Thursday in Sun Belt play. How can Denver be a Sun Belt city?

8. G. Washington (2-8 ATS): A dose of Philly Big Five ball this week against LaSalle and St. Joseph’s.

7. Arizona St (2-9 ATS): The Sun Devils are 8-5 overall, so they aren’t that shabby. Home to Stanford and Cal this week.

6. Miami, Ohio (2-9 ATS): The RedHawks managed a push Sunday night at Kansas, losing by 27. They won’t lose by 27 to Ohio U.

5. Niagara (2-8 ATS): The Purple Eagles have Fairfield, Rider and Siena all in a six day span.

4. St. Louis (1-8 ATS): Down from 8 and headed into the Top 3 with Dayton and Temple upcoming in the A-10.

3. Texas Tech (2-8 ATS): Covering against New Mexico cost Red Raiders the No. 1 spot. Biggie with Baylor this Saturday.

2. Miss St (1-8 ATS): Bulldogs are 0-5 SU in Starkville, a city aptly named. Please keep the cards and letters.

1. San Diego (1-11 ATS): The Toreros if you please. Not the Aztecs, Chargers or Padres. Headed to Malibu to surf with Pepperdine.
