Yanks put Colon on DL with strained hamstring by The Sports Network

The Yankees placed right-hander Bartolo Colon on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, one day after he was knocked out of a game because of a strained left hamstring.

Colon, 38, had been humming along in his first season with the Yankees, rediscovering some of the form that helped him win the AL Cy Young Award with the Angels six years ago.

But he came up limping while attempting to cover first base on a groundout in the seventh inning of a 4-0 win over the Indians.

“My guess is, he was trying to get over and push a little harder (because the grass was wet),” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said after Saturday’s game. “I can’t tell you exactly when he did it.”

Colon still earned the victory — his third straight winning decision — and is 5-3 with a 3.10 earned run average in 13 games this season, including 10 starts.

He is 158-106 with a 4.06 ERA in 14 seasons with the Indians, Expos, White Sox, Angels, Red Sox and Yankees. Arm problems caused him to miss the entire 2010 season.

Also on Sunday, the Yankees placed right-hander Amauri Sanit on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 11 with right elbow inflammation. They recalled righty Hector Noesi and left fielder Chris Dickerson from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
