SEATTLE’S LAST STAND?

Last week the Mariners were just two games out of first in the AL West. Now they are 7½ and hosting the very hot Rangers. Texas and the LA Angels have separated themselves from Seattle and Oakland by beating them up just before the All Star break. If Seattle loses this series it could mean the end to this season and perhaps a fire sale to ease payroll. A backs-to-the-wall series for the M’s.

FISH BITING IN CHICAGO

The Florida-Cubs matchup in Chicago is hardly marquee, but caught our eye on a light Thursday schedule because the Marlins are under the radar. Plus, if you are an NL fan, as I am because there’s no DH, this is the game to handicap. And we like the momentum of Florida, a team on the rise, against a fading Cubs team that has no real incentive coming out of the All Star break. With the game at Wrigley, there should be even more value on the Marlins away from South Beach. Jack McKeon is righting that ship.
