Padres to honor all-time saves leader Hoffman by The Sports Network

The San Diego Padres will honor Major League Baseball’s all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman in a post-game retirement ceremony on August 21.

The festivities will take a look back at his storied career that spanned 18 season, including 16 with the Padres. The franchise will also retire Hoffman’s number 51 during that time.

“We are excited to honor Trevor for his tremendous playing career and thank him for his contributions to Major League Baseball and, specifically, the San Diego Padres,” vice chairman and CEO Jeff Moorad said. “He is an iconic figure in Padres’ history and is unquestionably deserving of a celebration to be remembered for years to come.”

Hoffman announced his retirement in January and became part of the club’s front office. The California native ended his career with 601 saves in 677 opportunities, to go along with a 61-75 record and a 2.87 ERA.

The seven-time All-Star held opponents to a .211 batting averages and recorded 1,133 strikeouts in 1,035 relief appearances. While with the Padres, he collected 552 saves in 618 opportunities with a 2.76 ERA.

The August 21st game is scheduled for a 4:05 p.m. (et) start against the Florida Marlins.
