Gregory leaves Dayton for Georgia Tech job by the Sports Network
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) – Georgia Tech has named Brian Gregory its new men’s basketball coach.
Gregory spent the past eight seasons at the University of Dayton and will replace Paul Hewitt, who was fired earlier this month after 11 seasons guiding the Yellow Jackets.
“Brian Gregory is not only an outstanding basketball coach, but he is a tireless worker and recruiter who cares deeply about his players,” said Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich in a statement Monday. “There is no question that he will succeed as basketball coach at Georgia Tech, and he will win by doing things the right way.”
The Flyers were 172-94 under Gregory, including a 22-14 mark this past season. Dayton reached the NCAA Tournament twice during Gregory’s tenure and won the NIT championship in 2010 — beating Georgia Tech rival North Carolina for the crown. Another trip to this year’s NIT ended with a loss to the College of Charleston in the first round.
In addition to the on-court success, every senior who played for Gregory at Dayton — entering this season — graduated.
Gregory, who had a contract with Dayton through the 2017-18 season, was an assistant at Michigan State, Toledo and Northwestern. He had two stints as an assistant with the Spartans — first from 1990-95 and again from 1999-2003.
The Yellow Jackets were 190-162 in Hewitt’s 11 seasons, including a trip to the national championship game in 2004, but finished just 13-18 in 2010-11.
