Minnesota’s Love named Most Improved Player by The Sports Network

New York, NY (Sports Network) – Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love has been named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for the 2010-11 season.

Love received 66 first-place votes and a total of 400 points from a panel of 116 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, topping Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge for the honor. Aldridge finished with 157 points and 11 first-place votes in the balloting.

Players were awarded five points for a first-place vote, three points for second and one point for third. Golden State’s Dorell Wright was third in the balloting with 124 points and 16 first-place votes.

Love averaged 20.2 points and a league-best 15.2 rebounds in 73 games this season, an increase from his production of 14.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in 2009-10. He set a post-merger era NBA record with 53 straight double-doubles, a streak that came to an end on March 13 as he battled through nagging injuries that eventually cut his season short in early April.

“For me, at this point in my career, this award probably means the most,” said Love at a news conference. “I have to thank the fans. They supported us throughout the year, throughout the double-double streak.”

In his third season out of UCLA, Love was named an All-Star this year for the first time as an injury replacement for Houston’s Yao Ming. He became the first player to average at least 20 points and 15 rebounds since Moses Malone in 1982-83.
