To Honor and Serve, Stay Thirsty, Uncle Mo ….  Three Blockbuster Summer Movies releases?  Not quite, rather a few Kentucky Derby hopefuls that have opened horse bettors’ eyes the last two weeks.

Stay Thirsty, son of Bernardini, won the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct this past Saturday.

Trainer Todd Pletcher was very happy with the performance.  Stay Thirsty was wide throughout much of the race but jockey Ramon Dominquez dug in and Stay Thirsty came clear with a resounding 3 1/4 length victory.  Pletcher will next run Stay Thirsty in the Florida Derby or the Arkansas Derby.

Another Pletcher trainee, Uncle Mo, is set for the Timely Writer Stakes Race at Gulfstream Park this Saturday March 12. This will be the 3 year old debut for a horse many consider as one of the early favorites to win the Derby.  This is a mile and 1/16 prep race leading to the Run for the Roses.

April 3rd we will see Bill Mott’s trainee, To Honor and Serve, head to the gate in the Florida Derby. To Honor and Serve finished a disappointing 3rd in the Fountain of Youth, his last out. Mott wasn’t worried about his finish and expects To Honor and Serve to be ready April 3.

Dialed In is also heading to the Florida Derby. Trained by Nick Zito, Dialed In lost for the first time this past weekend at Gulfstream Park. He finished a fast closing second in a mile and 1/8 allowance race. Zito and jockey Julian Leparoux both felt it was a good learning experience and expect a big performance in the Florida Derby.

If the Derby were run today, my pick would be Dialed In. I love this jockey/trainer combo and his closing style. He would be about 8-1 odds, which I also like the price!

Check back each week for more Derby thoughts as we head closer to the first Saturday in May.
